A foundation in science for supporting investments with real-world impact

Laura Munck, M.Sc., Analyst

For three years, Laura Munck was Student Assistant at Sound Bioventures while also pursuing graduate studies in biomedical sciences at the molecular level. Now, she has the full-time role of Analyst. It’s her first professional position and puts her right where she wants to be.


“I’ve always been fascinated with all things science,” says Munck.

Growing up in south-eastern Denmark, Munck’s childhood dream was to be a dolphin trainer, which, as she explains, evolved into a desire to study marine biology. “Then my focus kind of shifted towards human biology and human disease, which obviously led me in the way of molecular biomedicine.”

But Munck was also interested in economics and business. As a 20-year-old undergraduate, she initially felt torn about choosing one area of study over another. In the end, she opted for science.

“I thought: Okay, better to build a scientific foundation and then get the business side on top of that later,” Munck recalls. “So I always  had it in mind that I wanted to combine those interests.”

Research experience for the lab but also investing

Munck holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Molecular Biomedicine from the University of Copenhagen. Her thesis work for both degrees focused on brain development.

“During my education, I found that neuroscience was a field that really spoke to me,” she says. “I did mostly neurodevelopmental disorders. Schizophrenia, autism, and ADHD, stuff like this. My master’s thesis was on something called biomolecular condensates, which is quite a new area and the science that we did was really interesting.”

Lab work and research experience came through stints at the university’s Stromgaard Lab and Biotech Research & Innovation Centre (BRIC), while student assistant roles at biopharmaceutical Lundbeck and biotech research company Novozymes provided hands-on industry experience.

Yet Munck wanted something more. Something that combined science and business. So after completing her bachelor’s degree in 2023, she took time off before starting graduate school to research Denmark’s biotech landscape.

Someone at a Swedish investment firm suggested Munck reach out to Sound Bioventures. She sent an email and landed an interview.

“Sound Bioventures was quite new at that time. They had never had a student assistant,” says Munck. “So I felt like I got quite a lot of ownership of projects and also the role in itself.”

A core aspect of the part-time position was the initial screening of investment opportunities. But Munck, who held the role while pursuing her Master’s degree, also helped develop the firm’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework, as well as how to measure the real-world impact of its investments.

A strong interest in bridging theory and practice

For Munck, a key draw of biotech investment is how it often requires the opposite of research’s narrow focus.

“Probably what led me to the field or why I find it interesting is that I think I have quite a broad scientific curiosity,” she explains, noting that there’s also an inquisitiveness regarding the bridge between research and the real world. “I want to understand the translation from great science to a company and to patient benefit.”

Those intrinsic forces, along with her previous experience with the firm, made responding to Sound Bioventures’ offer of a full-time analyst role after she completed her Master’s in June of 2026 an easy yes.

“This is what I wanted to do from the beginning,” Munck says, referring to starting right out in biotech over other career routes like a PhD or research assistant. “I’ve been really focused on going this way and staying here.”

“Scientific due diligence is doing your own research in the field”

Based in Copenhagen, Munck’s main responsibility as Analyst at Sound Bioventures is to support the investment team in evaluating new opportunities. A big part of that requires understanding and engaging with the current biotech ecosystem – tracking its latest trends, attending conferences, and networking with industry leaders.

It also includes performing due diligence that goes far beyond talking to startup founders.

“Founders are always very passionate about their projects. They have to be,” Munck explains. But any project or idea has to be reviewed objectively for truly accurate analysis. “So the scientific due diligence is doing your own research in the field.”

That means reading through journals and scientific papers, but also finding and talking to independent experts, like doctors or researchers, to gain invaluable perspective and properly assess if something is truly a path forward for treating patients.

“The most important thing is that you come with an understanding of science,” says Munck. “It’s quite a special space to be in, just in terms of driving medicine to people, so that scientific sense is really important to have if you want to help guide a company to go where we want them to go.”
